For stays longer than one year: non-EU students will need a Residence Permit. Firstly, in order to apply for a Residence Permit, students need to have completed and entered a Residence Visa into their passports before entering Portugal (valid for a period of 4 months). Non-Eu students can apply for the Residence Visa at a Portuguese Embassy or Portuguese Consulate in their home country or in their country of residence. Afterwards, the application for a Residence Permit is automatically appointed at the Integration, Migration and Asylum Agency (AIMA, Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo) and it must be submitted personally on a standard form signed by the applicant. The application can be submitted at any AIMA’s directorate or regional delegation and it may take up to 90 days to be issued by our authorities. Residence permits are valid according to the duration of the student's program.

Some or all of the following standard documents may be required:

  • Residence Visa
  • Two identical passport-sized color photographs with plain background
  • Valid Passport
  • Completed AIMA's application form
  • Proof of address
  • Proof of sufficient means of support
  • Criminal record from the country of nationality of the person applying or criminal record from the country where the citizen resided for more than one year before residing in Portugal, duly authenticated
  • Proof of enrollment
  • Proof that you have no debts at Universidade Católica Portuguesa
  • Proof of health insurance coverage or proof that you are covered by the National Health Service

Opening a bank account might seem intimidating, but it's entirely doable and it will benefit students' day-to-day life.

CATÓLICA-LISBON has established a partnership with the national bank “Caixa Geral de Depósitos”, which is responsible for the issuance of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa student cards. In a branch of the bank, you can open a bank account without costs. In order to do this you should bring the following documents with you:

  1. National Identification Card or Valid Passport;
  2. Portuguese Fiscal Number (NIF) - See information regarding NIF
  3. Rental contract or Bank declaration (this can also be issued by the International Office stating your Portuguese address, as proof of address.)

After being successfully admitted, students will receive our Student Guide with more detailed information on how to proceed step by step.

In case students decide to open a Portuguese bank account, one of the necessary requirements is a Portuguese Fiscal Number (NIF) issued by the Tax Offices (“Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira” or “Finanças”).

Students must present the following:
1. Identity Document/Passport;
2. Document proving an address in Portugal;

No costs are charged for the issuance of this document.

Important: It is highly recommended that students book an appointment in advance if they need to visit a Tax Office to obtain their NIF (Tax Identification Number). While students can potentially be attended to without an appointment if they arrive before 11:30 AM, this is not guaranteed.

Alternatively, the process can be completed online. Please note that all students from countries outside the European Union must have a Portuguese Tax Representative, whether they request the NIF in person or online.

If, at any point during the process, students need a Portuguese Tax Representative, please write to we.are.clsbe@ucp.pt

Portugal has a public healthcare system, run by the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS).

Most essential medical services are available free of charge, while non-essential services or treatments require a small co-payment. Lisbon has plenty of hospitals and healthcare facilities, so there are many options to choose from in terms of either public facilities or private institutions.

You can take a look at some of them here:

keyboard_arrow_up FAQs - During your stay
keyboard_arrow_up 1. What are my rights as a tenant?
  • Live with family

The tenant has the right to live with his family (those who live in the same household and/or are the spouse or relatives in a straight line or up to the 3rd degree of collateral) in rent for housing. A tenant can also receive three guests.

  • Small deterioration

For reasons of comfort and indulgence, the tenant can make minor deterioration in the property, such as holes for hanging pictures, television cables or shelves.

  • Urgent repairs on property

If the owner does not undertake urgent nature repairs, the tenant can take the initiative and then be entitled to reimbursement of costs (discounted value in the rent amount by submitting evidence).

  • Contract Termination

The tenant may terminate the contract before its end, but always respecting the legal term advance indicated in the contact.

keyboard_arrow_up 2 .What are my responsibilities as a tenant?
  • Paying your rent

Every month the tenant is obliged to timely pay the contracted income, which is updated annually.

  • Pay for the running costs (if not included in the rent amount established with landlord)

Bills concerning the use of public network water, electricity or gas are the responsibility of the tenant.

  • Preserving the property

The tenant must keep the property without ever damaging it. If causing damage (or their relatives and visitors) he has to pay out of his pocket. The tenant should also not carry out works that alter the features of the property. To change the internal or external structure of the property, it is required the written consent of the landlord.

  • Inform the landlord

The tenant has to make the owner know verifiable defects in housing (such as pipes problems, broken glass, electrical problems, etc.).

  • Use effectively the property

The tenant must effectively use the property leased, not leaving it without usage for more than a year, except in cases of proven illness, force majeure, performance of military duties or professional commitments of the tenant, his spouse or partner.

  • Using the property for the purpose it is intended

The property must be used according to its purpose (residential or non-residential). The lessee cannot for example rent an office to dwell on it.

  • Authorize inspection

If the landlord asks to check the rented property, the tenant must allow inspection by the lessor or by a person authorized by him, provided that the day and time are previously set.

  • Good neighborhood

In neighborly relations with other owners or tenants of nearby buildings or the same building, the tenant must keep the rules of the condominium and respect the law of the noise. No loud noise is allowed after 10 p.m.

  • Return the property as you found it

At the end of contract the tenant has to return the property in the same conditions in which it began the contract (including small deteriorations).

keyboard_arrow_up 3. Where can I request a proof of accommodation to deliver at the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA)?

You can present a copy of your rental contract or running costs bill (water, electricity, gas) if they are registered under your name, you can also request an address declaration from your local parish (“Junta de Freguesia”), which needs to be signed by three witnesses registered in the parish attesting your residence.
