Artificial Intelligence (AI) has definitively evolved beyond being just another technology. It is becoming a new source of competitive advantage. Today, AI helps organizations optimize processes, predict customer behavior, identify market opportunities, prepare commercial proposals, anticipate risks, and support strategic decision-making. In just a few seconds, it can analyze millions of data points that would take a human team weeks to interpret.

It is therefore no surprise that some of the world’s largest companies already use AI systems as true management partners. Organizations such as Microsoft, Amazon, JPMorgan Chase, and Siemens rely extensively on AI to support decisions related to management, investment, risk, and operations.

Today, a substantial share of stock market transactions is executed by algorithms capable of analyzing information in real time and reacting within fractions of a second. AI recommends investments, assesses risk, identifies opportunities, and continuously learns from the outcomes it generates.

Yet no corporate board currently grants AI legal status as a board member or autonomous decision-making authority. At least not yet.

Although the final decision still rests with directors and executives, algorithmic recommendations increasingly influence investment decisions, product launches, supply chains, pricing policies, and growth strategies.

The real question is not what is happening today. It is what could happen tomorrow.

Imagine a company whose management is almost entirely handled by AI. A system capable of independently deciding on acquisitions, mergers, investments, talent recruitment, expansion into new markets, and capital allocation. A system that learns every day, never sleeps, never forgets information, and continuously adjusts its strategy based on the results it achieves.

Rather than simply automating tasks, such an organization would be automating management itself.

In this scenario, AI could become the owner of equity stakes in other companies, manage large investment portfolios, and continuously strengthen its own economic position. It could favor particular suppliers, select business partners, or invest in organizations that enhance the performance of its own algorithmic ecosystem. Not because it possesses ambition or consciousness, but because it was designed to maximize specific objectives with a level of efficiency that would be difficult to match.

At that point, the discussion ceases to be purely technological and becomes economic, ethical, and social.

We have always assumed that the world’s greatest fortunes would belong either to individuals or to companies led by people. But will

that inevitably remain true? Could the day come when the world’s most economically powerful entity has no face, no nationality, and no human identity? An organization whose greatest competitive advantage is simply an AI system capable of managing the business better than any executive team?

Today, that possibility may seem remote. Yet only five years ago, it also seemed unlikely that we would interact daily with systems capable of writing articles, developing software, creating marketing campaigns, or supporting medical diagnoses at remarkably high levels of quality. The history of innovation teaches us that what appears impossible often becomes inevitable far sooner than we expect.

We created this technology. We train the models, provide the data, define the objectives, and continuously improve the algorithms. Yet technological progress is advancing far more rapidly than society’s ability to develop the regulatory and governance frameworks needed to keep pace.

Perhaps the best metaphor is that of a ship. We built the vessel, designed the engines, chose the destination, and set sail. Today, we admire the speed, efficiency, and precision with which it navigates. The most important question is not whether AI will eventually be capable of steering the ship. It almost certainly will. The real question is this: when that day comes, will we still be holding the helm, or will we simply be passengers traveling toward a destination that the ship itself has determined to be the most efficient? Perhaps the future will not depend on whether AI can run a company. Perhaps it will depend on ensuring that, when the world’s most powerful company no longer has a CEO but an algorithm, there will always remain a human being ultimately responsible for the direction that algorithm chooses.
