Program Structure

The CATÓLICA-LISBON Ph.D. programs are four years. The programs ensure  a comprehensive academic foundation and promote students to conduct cutting-edge research. The first year is dedicated to coursework. The next three years deepen students' knowledge base and skill set and promote research at the frontiers of science

Students have the opportunity to tailor their academic journey through advanced elective courses in their specific areas of interest.

The first year is entirely focused on coursework to provide students with essential knowledge in research methods, economics and business administration, covering topics such as marketing, management, and operations. Students also take courses in quantitative methods, research methodologies, and organizational theory, equipping them with the analytical and methodological tools needed to conduct rigorous research.

Mandatory Courses Include:

  • Statistics
  • Econometrics
  • Microeconomics
  • Organization Theory
  • Research Methods
     

Additionally, students can select from a variety of electives, allowing them to tailor their learning experience.

In the second year, students can enhance their expertise by taking elective courses that align with their specific research interests. Additionally, students can apply for a research visit for a part or whole semester at a top tier partner university. This enables students to expand their research competence, gain international exposure and broaden their academic network.

Students must also complete a second-year paper, which will be evaluated by the program’s scientific committee. This paper is a crucial step in demonstrating their research competence and advancing their academic journey.

The final two years are dedicated to dissertation research, which involves producing a collection of research papers with the goal of publication in leading academic journals. Throughout these years, students continue to participate in PhD Research Seminars to refine their research and receive feedback from faculty and peers.

Students will also have the opportunity to collaborate in teaching, allowing them to develop valuable teaching and communication skills essential for future academic positions.

Highlights of the Program

Tailored Curriculum

No formal specialization areas, but the program offers a variety of advanced electives in marketing, management, and operations/information management/analytics.

Mentorship

Close mentorship from faculty, guiding students through the research process and academic career development.

Exchange term

In the second year, students can take additional coursework in their specific research area and/or develop their research for part or a whole semester at a top-tier partner university.

Teaching Experience

Students are encouraged to collaborate in at least one course, allowing them to develop their teaching skills.

International Exposure

Opportunities to present research at international conferences and interact with a global network of scholars.
