Full Professor, holds a PhD in Business Administration (City, University of London, Bayes Business School, London), an MBA (Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Lisbon), an undergraduate degree in Economics (UCP, Lisbon) and two diplomas in Strategy and Finance (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston). He teaches Strategy, Creativity and Strategic Entrepreneurship (which are also his scientific research domains) at the undergraduate, MBA, MSc, Executive Education, and Executive Masters levels. Several of his courses reached a top position in students’ assessments over the years, such as Introduction to Management and Advanced Strategy in Action (Undergraduate program), Strategy (MSc), Strategy (MBA), and Strategy (Executive Master in Management). In October 2022, he received the Católica-Lisbon's Excellence in Teaching Award.
He conceptualized, coordinated, and taught in dozens of Executive Education programs (including for many of the largest firms in Portugal). His innovative, single-instructor, program “Strategic Management & Value Creation” for executives (in both standard and customized versions) has systematically received very high participant satisfaction levels. He coordinated several consulting projects within CATÓLICA-LISBON's Center for Applied Studies.
He performed several executive roles at the School, namely as an Associate Dean of CATÓLICA-LISBON, a Director of the Business Administration Undergraduate Program, and as a founder and Director of the Executive Masters in Management. He was the co-author of the transformation of the undergraduate program in Business Administration from a 5-year to a 4-year program (2002) and the author of the first programs of the Master of Science in Management (2006), and the Executive Masters in Management (2013) as well.
He has published articles in top scientific journals in Management, such as the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Management, the Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science, and the Strategic Management Journal. At the end of 2017, his paper on the reconceptualization of dynamic capabilities was in the top 10 of most cited scientific articles published worldwide since 2010 in the category of Strategic Management, according to the Google Scholar data. Recently, he published in the Academy of Management Review the article “Navigating Uncharted Waters: How Executives Originate High-Quality Ideas for Strategic Responses to Unprecedented Shocks”[LINK: https://www.clsbe.lisboa.ucp.pt/news/professor-ilidio-barreto-executives-confidence-and-dynamics-decoding-emergence-high-quality-ideas ], which offers a revolutionary theory on idea origination that opens new avenues for thinking in the Strategy and Creativity fields. He won the 2012 Best Paper Award of the prestigious Journal of Management Studies; the prize was awarded in 2013 for his article "Solving the entrepreneurial puzzle: The role of entrepreneurial interpretation in opportunity formation and related processes". For many years, he has been associated with some of the most influential scientific publications in Management: he was a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Management Studies, the Board of Review of the Journal of Business Venturing, and the Board of Review of Academy of Management Journal. In 2021, 2023, and 2024, he was included in the World’s Top Scientists list compiled by Stanford University.
