Degree in Law (University of Coimbra, 1961) and Doctor H. C. (University of Lisbon, 2011).
Founder of SEDES, minister in three governments, he had a professional career in banking and philanthropy. He was chairman of the IPCG General Council (2007-2011).
He is currently a member of the Superior Council of the Catholic University of Portugal, chairman of the Board of Founders of the Serralves Foundation, Senior Advisor of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and chairman of the Ethics Committee of Banco de Portugal.
