Studying abroad is, without a doubt, a great opportunity to develop your curriculum and immerse yourself in another country's culture. However, when choosing where you would like to go, be sure to make a realistic budget overview of all the costs associated with your Exchange Program.

The cost of your Exchange Program will depend on several factors, such as:

  • Fees at CATÓLICA-LISBON;
  • Fees at the Host University (if applicable);
  • Mobility type;
  • Length of your stay (one-year or one-semester);
  • Living costs at your chosen destination.

Students are responsible for all the costs associated with the Exchange Program. We strongly advise you to research this information prior to the application period, in order to meet your academic and personal needs.

Fees at CATÓLICA-LISBON during the international mobility period

During the semester/year abroad, all students must pay the annual enrolment and monthly tuition fees to CATÓLICA-LISBON. Although you will not be physically present on our University campus, you are still a UCP Student.

This also guarantees that students are covered by the UCP’s student insurance (only against accidents).

Master Program

In the case of Master students, the total cost of the four-semester-long program is available on CATÓLICA-LISBON's Website under Tuition Fees & Scholarships.

Undergraduate Program

In the case of Undergraduate students, monthly tuition fees are calculated taking into consideration 30 ECTS. Students will pay a flat monthly fee corresponding to 30 ECTS (e.g. 30 ECTS × €19,10/ECTS = €573/month).

Please check the Tuition Fees & Scholarships page for accurate information about your program fees.

Please note:

  • If exchange students take less than 30 ECTS in coursework abroad, there will be no refund of any kind (please note that there is no reimbursement for the course waivers done abroad).
  • If exchange students take more than 30 ECTS in coursework abroad, they will have to settle the extra cost corresponding to the ECTS in excess upon return to CATÓLICA-LISBON.

Fees at the Host University

Students going to Erasmus+ destinations are exempted from registration and tuition fees at the Host University.

Students going to Non-Erasmus+ destinations are exempted from tuition fees at the Host University. Exceptions to this are published at Universities Profile in the Outgoing Platform. Please refer to each university profile individually and verify the details.

Students under the Free Mover Program have to pay fees and/or monthly tuition fees both at the Host University and at CATÓLICA-LISBON. For information about the fee amounts and payment procedures, students must consult the Host University's website or contact their international office directly.

Please note that in some Host Universities, administrative fees might be applicable such as registration fees, health insurance fees, academic material costs, etc. These fees are determined by each partner school and subject to change anytime without prior notice.

Living Costs

Apart from tuition fees, living costs can also be an inportant factor of your experience abroad. The total cost may depend on the length of your stay, the country, and the mobility type chosen.

It is crucial to make an estimated budget of all possible expenses associated with your Exchange Program. Living costs will vary from country to country so its crucial to estimate your monthly expenses for the mobility period:

  1.  Assess your personal budget
  2. Consult the Host University website which contains useful information about costs at that university and the city in particular, namely:
    1. Accommodation costs
    2. Daily transportation
    3. Academic materials
    4. Food
    5. Fees
    6. Leisure activities, etc.
  3. Make use of online resources such as travel blogs, feedback from previous Exchange students and tools like www.numbeo.com to compare the living costs between countries.

You should also take into consideration that there are some costs that are due prior to your departure:

  • International journey (flight/train/bus tickets)
  • Visa Fees (if applicable)
  • Health Insurance (if applicable), etc.

Withdrawal

Make a conscientious decision and hold true to your commitments. It is important that students have a professional attitude regarding commitments and formal agreements. Should you decided to withdraw from the Exchange Program, you must communicate your intention to the International Relations office as soon as possible.

Withdrawals may have serious consequences for all parties, namely:

  • Other potentially interested students were prevented to benefit from a slot that will remain unused;
  • Future relations between CATÓLICA-LISBON and the Host University may be compromised;
  • Next year's slots may be reduced, thus limiting next year students' options.

Withdrawal Penalty

Should a student withdraw from the Exchange or the TRI-School Program, a fee will be charged in accordance with UCP's Full Tuition Fees List (as of 2023/2024):

  • €400 - penalty for withdrawal from the One-SEMESTER Exchange Program (after the application deadline);
  • €600 - penalty for withdrawal from One-SEMESTER Exchange Program for the purpose of enrolling in the Free-Mover Program (after the application deadline);
  • €2000 - withdrawal from one or both semesters of the One-YEAR Exchange Program or the TRI-School Program (after the application deadline).

The withdrawal fee is also applicable to students who do not comply with Partner Universities procedures or requirements.

Students are exempted from the withdrawal fee in the following situations:

  • Student's serious illness or injury;
  • Death of an immediate relative;
  • Non-allocation at the time of application.
