Academic rules

During the international mobility program, students must comply with the academic rules of both CATÓLICA-LISBON and the Host University. Students cannot be simultaneously enrolled for courses in both institutions. 

 

ECTS abroad

The recommended workload at CATÓLICA-LISBON is 30 ECTS for a regular semester. During the international mobility program, students are allowed to register for courses up to a maximum of 37 ECTS (per semester). 

For Undergraduate students, monthly tuition fees are calculated taking into consideration the performance of 30 ECTS/semester. For detailed information about the program fees of each program, please check CATÓLICA-LISBON’s Tuition Fees and Payments List.

 

Please note that:

> If students take less than 30 ECTS per semester in coursework abroad, there will be no refund of any kind (there is no reimbursement for the course waivers done abroad);  

> If students take more than 30 ECTS per semester in coursework abroad, they will have to settle the extra cost corresponding to the ECTS in excess upon return to CATÓLICA-LISBON at the end of the mobility period; 

> For students participating in the One-YEAR Program, the settlement of the abovementioned extra costs relates to the attendance of more than 60 ECTS (30 ECTS * 2 semesters) and will take place at the end of the second semester, if applicable. 

 

Courses abroad

When going abroad, students must adequate their courses’ selection according to the requirements of their study plan. All courses will need to be internally approved prior to the course enrolment at the Host University, as further explained in the Study Plan definition section of these guidelines.  

> Core Courses

Students are encouraged to take most mandatory courses of their program at CATÓLICA-LISBON, as it cannot be guaranteed that these courses will be available at the Host University.  

There must be a very high degree of content similarity between CATÓLICA-LISBON’s mandatory courses and the prospective equivalents at the partner universities (“waivers”). 

Subject to the Exchange Academic Coordinator’s approval, students may take a maximum of: 

  • 3 mandatory courses per semester in the One-SEMESTER Program;  
  • 5 mandatory courses per year in the One-YEAR Program. 
NOTE
  • Students must ensure compliance with the maximum number of waivers permitted during the mobility period, as no excessive mandatory courses will be credited. 
  • If students cannot complete the desired study plan at the Host University and remain with missing requirements to be completed, they may perform Finalist Exams according to CATÓLICA-LISBON’s rules available here

 

> Elective Courses

Students can select elective courses according to their area of interest, provided that the content is relevant towards their degree. Thus, and besides courses in Management, Economics and/or Finance, students can also choose elective courses from areas such as International Relations, Communication, Human Resources, Law, etc. 

> Language Courses

Language courses are not recognized within CATÓLICA-LISBON’s Undergraduate programs (cannot be considered for the total of 180 ECTS required to complete the program).  

However, students may attend language courses abroad. Despite not being credited, ECTS corresponding to language courses count towards the total number of ECTS taken during the mobility period. 

NOTE
  • Since language courses are not recognized within CATÓLICA-LISBON’s Undergraduate programs, students shall refrain from submitting the corresponding request at the Outgoing Platform. 
  • If the performance of a language course in addition to the regular workload at the Host University leads to exceeding the 30 ECTS foreseen per semester, students will have to settle the extra cost corresponding to the ECTS in excess upon return to CATÓLICA-LISBON.

The recommended workload at CATÓLICA-LISBON is 28 ECTS for a regular semester. During the international mobility program, students should complete a minimum of 18 ECTS up to a maximum of 36 ECTS in the Host University. 

NOTE
Students in the International MSc in Finance and International MSc in Management who wish to fulfill the international requirement with the exchange semester must complete (be approved in) at least 18 ECTS at the Host University.  

 

Courses abroad

When going abroad, students must adequate their courses’ selection according to the requirements of their study plan. All courses will need to be internally approved prior to the course enrolment at the Host University, as further explained in the Study Plan definition section of these guidelines.  

> Core Courses

Students are encouraged to take all mandatory courses of their program at CATÓLICA-LISBON, as it cannot be guaranteed that these courses will be available at the Host University.  

There must be a very high degree of content similarity between CATÓLICA-LISBON’s mandatory courses and the prospective equivalents at the partner universities (“waivers”). Furthermore, it is recommended that the waivers have sufficient ECTS to cover the original course requirement at CATÓLICA-LISBON*. 

Subject to the Exchange Academic Coordinator’s approval, students may take mandatory courses up to 7 ECTS in the Host University (equivalent to 2 trimester-long mandatory courses or 1 semester-long mandatory course). 

NOTE
  • Students must ensure compliance with the maximum number of waivers permitted during the mobility period, as no excessive mandatory courses will be credited. 
  • Be aware of which courses of your study plan must always be taken at CATÓLICA-LISBON (courses that cannot be taken abroad). 

 

> Elective Courses

Depending on the Master program (Specialization Elective, Economics Elective, Foundational Elective, Finance Elective, Analytics in Practice, Business Management & Economics): should be selected according to the field of studies/specialization of the student’s program. 

Free Electives: can be selected according to the students’ area of interest, provided that the content is relevant towards their degree. Thus, and besides courses in Management, Economics and/or Finance, students can also choose elective courses from areas such as International Relations, Communication, Human Resources, Law, etc. 

> Language Courses 

Students may take language courses at the Host University. These will be recognized in their program at CATÓLICA-LISBON according to the applicable study plan rules. 

 

 

*Depending on the credit system of the Host University, the corresponding credits’ conversion rule shall be applied.

ALTA DIGITAL
